“Book as Space, Book as Time” (Edition 1)

“Book as Space, Book as Time” (Edition 1)  was presented by 00123 from 23–25 January 2026 at Else, Kuala Lumpur. Bringing together a curated selection of art books across architecture, design, photography, and artist-led practices, the exhibition explored how space, time, and perception unfold through the act of reading, echoing Ulises Carrión’s assertion that “a book is a sequence of spaces… a book is also a sequence of moments” (1975).

Edition 1 focused on the structural conditions of reading, examining how the book operates as a system that shapes and directs the act of reading.

During the exhibition, the tables formed a reading path, labeled in progression as 0–0–1–2–3, drawing from Ulises Carrión’s understanding of the book as a sequential experience.

0–0
0–0 focuses on practices that treat the book as a medium in itself, beginning from the book’s structure. It gathers artist books from different periods, shaped by sequence, structure, and time. Through pages, rhythm, and repetition, these works quietly set the conditions for reading to take place.

1–2–3
1–2–3 unfolds through time as a medium, moving from structure toward experimental and cross-disciplinary practices. Here, the book is understood not only as a physical object, but as a medium through which meaning continues to evolve and be reinterpreted, as relationships and significance gradually emerge across different contexts.

The exhibition opened an ongoing exploration of the book as a medium, looking beyond its material form to examine how books are structured, inhabited, and revisited through time, inviting further inquiry into their role across different contexts and modes of engagement.
